- 16th century: rapid, quick (from adverb)

- verb - "abstain from food," the verb in the sense "to make fast" continued in ME, but was superseded by fasten


- semantic shift - inversion of the meaning (from the stable meaning "firm" to the dynamic meaning "rapid")
